I. — Subst. masc. Partisan du monothélisme. Marron habitait le désert, et ses disciples s'étant répandus dans les différentes régions de la Syrie, y bâtirent plusieurs monastères (...). Tous les chrétiens syriaques qui n'étaient pas alors infectés de l'hérésie des monothélites se réfugièrent autour de ces monastères, et de cette circonstance reçurent le nom de maronites (LAMART., Voy. Orient, t.2, 1835, p.100).
II. — Adj. Qui concerne le monothélisme ou qui lui est propre. Opinion monothélite. (Dict. XIXe et XXe s.).

DÉR. Monothélisme, subst. masc. Doctrine hérétique qui reconnaît au Christ deux natures, divine et humaine, mais une seule volonté, la volonté divine. Si les lettres d'Honorius avaient réellement contenu le venin du monothélisme, comment imaginer que Sergius, qui avait pris son parti, ne se fût pas hâté de donner à ces écrits toute la publicité imaginable?
